Response to “Lincoln’s Undelivered ‘Message to the Senate and House of Representatives'”

Posted by mcelynrh on December 1, 2008

In reading this post I came to think why it was not delivered to Congress. Actually, I can’t recall where this article came from, regarding the articles from Unit 4. I’m guessing it had to do with Article 34 (Lincoln and the Constitutional Dilema of Emancipation) but I am really not sure. Maybe Lincoln thought the message was unimportant?

Mcelyn, this message was undelivered to Congress because Lincoln’s cabinet unanimously disapproved of it. Lincoln wanted that former slave owners be compensated and he laid that out in this message, but his cabinet did not approve of his plan. This is why the message was undelivered.
