This is A True Relation of Such Occurrences and Accidents of Note as Hath Hapned in Virginia Since the First Planting of that Colony, which is now resident in the South part thereof, till the last returne from thence, John Smith’s 1608 letter from Jamestown to England.  The first and least excessive of the three.

This is Pocahontas: The Hostage who would become Famous by Helen Rountree, 2001.  She seems to concur with Townsend’s perspective and theory for the most part, but she much less overtly makes assertions about what she thinks may have happened.

This is Powhatan’s World and Colonial Virgina: A Conflict of Cultures by Frederich Gleason.  Gleason corroborates Townsend’s claim that John Smith probably made up the story of Pocahontas saving him during his captivity.
